We are at that time of the year again, Tax Season.  It is also the time of the year when people are looking for the biggest refunds regardless of what they did or didn’t do in the previous year.  What better time for tax preparers to make a lot of money.  Some tax preparers are very good in maximizing the clients’ situation, while others use this time to prey on the desperate tax payers.

It is very important to be careful of who you use for tax preparation services.  One step is to look for reviews given to that tax preparer.  There are so many reviews out there that are disturbing related to some tax preparers.  Some red flags written include:

– The tax preparer added things to their tax return that didn’t exist

– The tax preparer not returning calls or emails

– The tax preparer using different information from that provided by the tax payer

– Excessive wait time after given an appointment

– Not offering IRS Representation when they get audited for the tax preparer’s blunder

There are many more negative reviews online that would or should scare people.  Of course not all reviews are accurate as some people are known for leaving bad reviews unfairly.  While choosing a tax accountant, please be very careful of choosing people who will promise you the stars and moon without even taking a look at your tax situation.  As I’ve said before, always follow your intuition.  If it sounds too good to be true, it is too good to be true.

If and when you receive an IRS letter for the incorrect information, just remember the tax payer is ultimately responsible for what is on their tax return because they signed it.  That means additional penalties and interest charges added to their tax bill.  Please don’t fall victim to the scammers at this time of the year.  Try to choose a tax accountant with integrity.
