Yes it’s that time of the year again, but unlike the Christmas season, it’s not the most wonderful time of the year for most people.  It is known as Tax Season.  Many people fear this season for multiple reasons, just to give a few:

  – not knowing what to expect

  – fear of owing money

  – fear of IRS audit

  – fear of falling into the wrong tax preparer

If any of the following or more describes you, you are not alone.  There are many people who prepare tax returns for people, but maybe they shouldn’t be doing that.  ‘So what should I look for in a tax preparer?’ you might ask.  That is also a good question.

Step 1:

First start with certifications.  Yes anyone can file your taxes, but not anyone can represent you before the IRS in case you get an IRS audit letter.  You should look for any of the following certifications to help with that:

  – Enrolled Agent (EA)

  – Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

  – Tax Attorney

Step 2:

Regardless of the tax preparer’s certification, you should always ask questions.  You will end up signing your tax returns, as a result you will be held liable for incorrect information.  As a result make sure you ask a lot of questions.  If you don’t understand something you are being told, ask again.  If you get the feeling the tax preparer isn’t interested in answering your questions, maybe that’s a sign to look for another tax preparer.

Step 3:

It’s always a good idea to be able to speak to your tax preparer even during the off season.  Tax preparation services actually begins with tax planning before the tax season.  I will explain later the benefits of tax planning and why you should consult with your tax accountant before making major changes to your life.

Step 4:

This point can’t be overstated, but following your intuition.  If you just don’t feel comfortable in your guts with someone, maybe you shouldn’t be with that person.  The same thing is true with tax preparers.  Your tax accountant should be able to help alleviate your fears, not add to them.

I hope you found some of the information helpful regarding your search for Tax preparation services.  For help with your tax and bookkeeping needs, please feel free to contact us at https://www.triuneaccountinggroup.com, or info@triuneaccountinggroup.com, or (240) 676 – 0188.  We would love to be by your side in this season of fear.
